Apple Snickerdoodle Dump Cake

With an apple farm just down the road, I'm always looking for creative ways to use up those bushels. We love this cozy apple snickerdoodle dump cake with caramel drizzle and a scoop of vanilla or cinnamon ice cream.

6 cups sliced, peeled tart apple (about 8 medium)
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 package (17.9 ounces) snickerdoodle cookie mix
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 cup coarsely chopped pecans or walnuts
Whipped cream, optional

1. The oven to 350 degrees. Spread apples onto a greased 11x7-inch baking dish after tossing with sugars and fruit juices.

2. Put the cookie mix in a bowl and add the cinnamon-sugar packet's contents. Toss over apples. Add butter in a drizzle. Put pecans on top.

3. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until apples are soft and golden. If preferred, top with whipped cream before serving warm.

Although other baking apples also work in this recipe, our test kitchen prefers using Granny Smith apples.

Since pears have a similar moisture content to apples, they will also work. If you don't have fresh, another option is canned apple pie filling. As a fun way to mix things up, try including a handful of dried cranberries or other fruit.

Serve apple snickerdoodle dump cake with our best vanilla ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.
